On 30th August 2025 our 8-year-old son, had a minor motorbike crash. He had some cuts on his hand so we took him to after hours to have them cleaned and dressed. Upon arrival to the Medical Centre Joshua‘s presentation led the medical team to undertake a blood sugar test. The result was far higher than the normal range. After dressing his hand, they asked us to return the following day to retest as they were concerned about the test. We did return and the retest was again far higher than normal. The doctor came to see me and said the reading of these tests were so high that they were diagnostic of type one diabetes. She had contacted Christchurch Hospital who requested to admit Joshua as soon as possible. We were to spend a few days there while they monitored his insulin levels and balanced medications.
I looked at my watch. It was 9:45 am. Dean was at church for music practise prior to the service. I rang him to let him know what was going on before the service began. He was walking back into church when Roger stopped him and asked what was wrong. They went to the back of church and they prayed, because a father reached out for help for his son. In turn, the whole church prayed for Joshua while Dean left to meet us at the hospital. The subsequent blood sugar test showed the sugar levels had dropped. Every test after that showed that Joshua‘s blood sugar levels were within the normal range. The puzzled hospital staff discharged Joshua, revoking the diagnosis of type one diabetes.
